Molyneux Talks Milo And Artificial Intelligence
One of the major hits of E3 was Microsoft’s NATAL, especially Milo, the AI boy created by Peter Molyneux (Black & White, Fable 2) earned both accolades and sarcasm after video was made public of Milo interacting with people.
Of course, in the real world outside of tech demos, creating a computer friend that even comes close to “real” is years away. In a recent interview with Edge-Online, Molyneux discussed what makes Milo so lifelike.
“He’s not really intelligent – what we’re showing is a tentative first step towards making something that feels real. And by real, I mean that he’s aware of you.. An awful lot of Milo is like a Derren Brown mind trick. Derren Brown can’t really read your mind, what he does is collect together a number of little tricks that tell him things. You’ve got to remember that we’re not creating a piece of academic research; Milo can’t actually think – we’re just making the illusion that he can.”
So the question is: What’s the difference between showing all the indications of intelligence and actually being intelligent? That’s a question that game designers and gamers are going to be coming across more and more as AI becomes more complicated.
